Hubertusstock hunting lodge

The area around the Werbellinsee was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by Germanic pile dwellings on the eastern bank of the lake near Breden. On the north bank of the lake lies the Schorfheide, which was already highly valued as a hunting ground by the Brandenburg rulers and was originally called the “Große Heide Werbellin”.

It was created under Friedrich Wilhelm IV from 1847 to 1849, the Hubertusstock hunting lodge was built in Bavarian country style in honor of his wife Queen Elisabeth Ludovika. Legend has it that during a hike the Prussian king, impressed by the wonderful nature, pushed his hunting stick into the ground and said: "Here comes an inn!". At this point he had the Hubertusstein erected, which depicted a red deer head. The inn was named “Hubertusstock” after the patron god of hunting and King Jagdstock.

The hunting lodge was mainly used for royal hunts (1881 to 1884) and for the honeymoon of the royal family. Well-known guests stayed in the Hubertusstock, such as Kaiser Wilhelm I, Kaiser Wilhelm II, King Albert of Saxony, Crown Prince Friedrich and President von Hindenburg, who were enthusiastic hunters.

During the Weimar Republic, the Presidents Friedrich Ebert and Paul von Hindenburg used the building as quarters during their hunting trips to the Schorfheide. After Hindenburg's death, Adolf Hitler made the hunting lodge available to the head of the State Chancellery, Hans Heinrich Lammers, as a weekend home. From 1928 to 1945, forester Hövel's trophy collection was housed in the Hubertusstock, but unfortunately it was lost afterwards. After 1945, the hunting lodge belonged to the Brandenburg state government and served as a rest home for the army.

In 1971 the hunting lodge was demolished to its foundations and rebuilt within a year, trying to preserve the basic style. The floor plan was retained and built on the foundations of the old castle.

The old residential and farm buildings were demolished and the swimming pool, sauna, bowling alley and guest houses in the park were built. After the renovation, the hunting lodge became a guest house of the German Democratic Republic. The most famous meeting took place here in December 1981, the meeting between the then Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Erich Honecker. Also guests at Hubertusstock were Messrs. Strauß, Vogel, Wehner and Count Lambsdorff. Bresnew, Ortega, Jaruzelski and Raoul Castro were also there.
